Coaching Training

The UKBJJA offers two comprehensive courses for individuals interested in coaching or serving as an assistant coach. These nationally recognized coaching courses are delivered by Sport Structures and cover the skills required to deliver safe, progressive coaching sessions and support their learners.

The Level 1 course maps to the CIMSPA professional standard of Assistant Coach, while the Level 2 course maps to the CIMSPA professional standard for coaches.

The UKBJJA Coaching Awards

There are two levels of coaching award.

Level 1 Award in Assistant Coaching

The Level 1 Award in Assistant Coaching focuses on the skills and competences required to be able to assist the delivery of sports or physical activity coaching sessions under the direct supervision of a more qualified coach. Coaching topics include:

  • Roles and responsibilities of the coaching assistant
  • Rules and regulations
  • Safe coaching practice
  • Inclusive coaching practice
  • Deliver and evaluate coaching activities
  • Technical requirements of sport and physical activity.

This nationally recognized course is open to UKBJJA members who hold a minimum of a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and are at least 16 years of age. The program includes e-learning elements, so students should have access to a laptop and internet connection to complete these modules.

Learners who whish to work with athletes under the age of 18 are encouraged to complete safeguarding training in addition to pursuing this qualification.

Level 2 Certificate in Coaching

This course will support learners to develop the knowledge and skills required to lead their own coaching sessions within their own environment. The course will cover the following topics:

  • Developing your role as a coach
  • Developing your coaching practice
  • Understanding the individuals you coach
  • Managing relationships
  • Developing the coaching environment
  • Protecting self and others
  • Planning progressive coaching sessions
  • Delivering progressive coaching sessions
  • Reviewing progressive coaching sessions

In addition to completing this course, learners will also be required to complete a UK Coaching Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop, for which there is an additional fee. Successful completion of the course will enable learners to coach independently, without the supervision of a Level 2 coach.

This nationally recognized course is open to members of the UKBJJA who are at least 18 years of age and who hold a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
